Well, after a couple of months knocking on the door, Dave has very kindly let me join the RPG Bloggers network so that I can come and pollute the infostream here with my random burblings. I’ve been reading people’s output here for a while and think it’s a great community which I’m glad now to be a part of.
My postings will be infrequent but often quite lengthy (check out my earlier entries).
So, who is the Lurking Gherkin?
Race/Culture/Gender/Age: Human, British, Male, Forties
Class: Expert (with maybe a level of Fighter for the armour and weapon proficiencies - I re-enact)
Game: D&D, mostly
Started Playing: 1978 - Blue Book
DM or Player: DM, mostly (*sigh*)
Size of gaming group: 6 players plus me
Occupation: I’m a student right now - Applied Mathematical Modelling and Scientific Computing. Before that I worked 11 years in I.T. supporting electronics manufacturing activities. I’ve also worked as a database developer and college tutor.
Campaign/Setting/Ethos: Greyhawk with a 3.5e flavour, kind of old school feel but with a pinch of added zest. No you may not play an elven monk. But that doesn’t preclude your elf from learning to be one later on. You’ve got to earn your stripes.
How long has your present campaign been running?: Since 1995 I think.
What do you think of 4e?: I wish those who enjoy playing it well, but I have no plans to migrate to 4e. I don’t regard it as an upgrade. I find the ‘level up your game’ advertising slogan very irritating.
Music: Muse-ic (as in Muse, i.e. inspirational, artistic, creative, uplifting). Well, OK, mostly old rock bands from the pre greed-is-good era, or stuff inspired by them. But I’m quite broad-minded.
Pet Hates: False dichotomies, dogmatic thinking, blind consumerism and knee-jerk media outrage (just give me the news, let me decide whether I’m outraged, thanks).
Family: Married to a smart, beautiful Korean lady, with one smart, beautiful daughter.
Are you a fat, bearded guy with glasses?: Yes.
Ha! I knew it: (Defensively) Well, I’m not a blimp. Hey, I do kickboxing and I hit the gym every so often.
Is there anything you’d like to ask the RPG Blogging Community?: Yes. What the heck are Cheetos?

Welcome to the fold, and Cheetos are a brand of cheese curl made by Frito-Lay; they are a crunchy, cheese -flavored cornmeal snack known to leave your fingers dyed with their orange-yellow color.
I guess they are often found at many American game tables, but not mine.

All you need to know is that Cheetos will be the only readily available food, along with Twinkies, after the nuclear bombs go off.

Thanks for the welcome, folks! Actually I think we have something similar to Cheetos over this side of the pond, called ‘Wotsits‘…..

Welcome to the network! And by the way: being a fat, bearded guy with glasses isn’t so bad.
I am one of those myself!

Damn, obviously I’m really late to say hello. So here we go - welcome to the network - thanks for sharing. I’ve only managed to scan through your posts so far and I like what I’ve been reading.
Very nice series you’ve got here with the Character of the Week, I find it very useful so far and hope you’ll keep this up!
take care and have fun within the network and at the gaming table.
Btw I hope you’ll find a way to inspire some dm-greatness in the other players, since you don’t seem to happy about the fact that you’re sitting at the head of the table. It’s best to share this place, improves fun for everyone and get’s you all to improve as players and dungeon masters alike.

@ TheLemming: Well, thanks! It’s always nice to receive feedback. This blog’s been a bit quiet lately - I’ve been very busy with studies and had no chance for any updates recently.
Actually, though I am the main DM I have two co-DM’s who have helped shape the campaign world since the mid-90’s when it started. But for a variety of reasons (conversion 1e -> 3.5e being one of them), I held the chair continuously for the past two years.
This is now changing - since concluding the Falcon series, one of the other DM’s who has been absent from the table for a while has returned to the fold and is now back running his storyline from where we’d left off. So I get to enjoy the simple pleasure of just playing one character, something I’d really missed.
The third DM is now starting to show signs of wanting to referee some bits and pieces as well, which is good.
I also have a plan to let one of our newer players have a turn in the driving seat sometime in the not-too-distant.
